Radiators vs Fin Tube Baseboard

Houseneeds recommends and sells Myson radiators for the following reasons.

COMFORT — Myson Radiators deliver heat in two ways, and enhance your comfort throughout the heating season.
  1. Radiant heat is delivered directly from the radiator panels to you. Think of that pleasant feeling of satisfying warmth that you get by sitting around a wood stove or grandma’s old cast iron steam radiator on a cold winter day.
  2. Convective heat is delivered by warming the air creating a low to high air flow covering your outside walls and windows to create an envelope of warmth.
Conventional fin tube baseboards work by convection only, delaying the warming of the room and depriving you of the comforting warmth that only radiant heating can provide.
SPACE
Myson Radiators occupy only a fraction of the wall space compared to fin tube baseboard. As a result, you gain more space and flexibility for your interior design and furniture placement.
Conventional fin tube baseboard takes up way more desirable wall space than a Myson Radiator does.
DURABILITY
Myson Radiators are constructed of heavy gauge steel with a durable epoxy polyester powder coat finish strong enough to stand up to years of use, while maintaining their functionality and new appearance.
A fin tube baseboard’s thin sheet metal covers are easily damaged by vacuum cleaners, children’s toys, and rusting in damp environments — especially bathrooms — and do not stand up to the rigors of modern family life.
EFFICIENCY
Myson Radiators start heating immediately after hot water begins circulating though them. This fast heat delivery shortens the run time of your boiler, providing real fuel savings.
Fin tube baseboards, with their inefficient and slow heat delivery, take longer to heat your home and cost you more money for heating fuel.
VALUE
Myson Radiators, when properly installed, will provide you with a lifetime of comfort and value, saving you money, year after year, long after fin tube baseboard has lost its original condition and value.
Over time fin tube’s cover will degrade and the fins become coated with dust, lowering its ability to efficiently heat your home.
DESIGN CHOICE
Myson Radiators are available in a variety of sizes and designs, ranging from traditional to modern, accommodating all your interior decorating creations.
The traditional fin tube baseboard has no design appeal.
EASE OF CLEANING
Mounted off the floor, Myson Radiators make vacuuming and washing floors easy by allowing access to areas impossible to clean when baseboard is installed. Myson’s durable epoxy polyester finish is easily cleaned with non-abrasive household cleaner or a damp cloth.
Fin tube baseboard is very difficult to clean, leaving a dust laden interior and a dented and scuffed exterior because of the use of thin sheet metal. The interior aluminum fins are razor sharp, making it difficult to clean without cutting yourself.

Boiler maintenance products

Many householders only pay attention to their boilers when there is a failure and it needs to be repaired. The costs associated with these boiler repairs are typically high both in labor, much of which is done on an overtime basis, and the associated downtime. By far this is the least desirable approach to boiler maintenance. Therfor, a regular proactive maintenance program pays dividends when you have peak boiler performance. The goal of annual boiler maintenance is to have all of the components of the boiler inspected, ensuring they are in proper working condition.

Houseneeds sells several products that will help maintain your boiler system. Please find information about these products in this email.

Heatlink EasyFit Plumbing PEX Manifolds

Heatlink Easyfit Pex Manifolds come in 2 and 3 Port Tees and are sold with 1/2" PEX adapters. So just order the actual amount of ports you need and you should be good to go. There are several different End Connection you need to choose from as well as 3/4" Tee to allow you to send hot or cold water to a separte plumbing manifold in a different location. If you want to use this manifold with 3/8 Inch PEX tubing - buy our Coupler 1/2 by 3/8 inch for each branch you want to use with 3/8 Inch PEX. Use silicone lubricant to lubricate dry o-rings to ensure a tight seal. In case a leak develops during testing, remove pressure from system, clean the o-ring, and reapply silicon lube. When placing the manifold into the supporting bracket, place the bottom snap-in lock in the bottom (braced) notch in bracket and then rotate it so that the top snaps into place. In order to prevent stress on the manifold supply end connections, the supply piping must be braced or supported, parallel to the manifold and centred with the manifold’s inlets.

Houseneeds.com Installs an Empyre Phase II Elite XT Wood Boiler

Houseneeds.com, The Vermont based internet seller of energy efficient, environmentally friendly heating and ventilation products, has announced that they have finished the installation of a brand New Empyre Elite XT 200 Outdoor Wood Gasification Boiler. The Boiler, which resembles a small house, or a large dog house, is located on Houseneeds’ front lawn at 4805 Main Street in Waitsfield. Houseneeds plans on using the new Boiler as their primary source of heat.

All Empyre Wood Boilers use a process called wood gasification to produce super efficient combustion in the boiler’s dual burn chambers. There are five elements that work together to create this 89-90% efficient, clean burning, and environmentally safe Wood Gasification process:

The Firebox is where the wood burns from the bottom up, drying the top layer. The fire brick lining absorbs heat and maintains burn chamber temperatures to reignite quickly
    on demand.

Exhaust is then forced down into the lower burn chamber.
The Lower Burn Chamber is where the exhaust burns at up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, eliminating virtually all smoke and gases.

The Flues are where the exhaust air escapes through multiple heat exchange flues running through the water jacket, transferring heat quickly and efficiently.

The Chimney exhaust has now been cooled to 350 degrees Fahrenheit by the time it exits the chimney.

What is the difference between a condensing and non-condensing boiler?

What is the difference between a condensing and non-condensing boiler?

All boilers under certain conditions will condense.  The difference between a condensing and non-condensing boiler is that a condensing boiler is designed to operate and survive long term in a condensing environment.  A non-condensing boiler will not last as long, because condensate is corrosive.

The condition that causes a boiler to condense is reduced flue gas temperature.  The point at which condensing will occur, also called the dew point of the products of natural gas (or propane) combustion, is about 130F.  Above this temperature, the moisture entrained in flue products as water vapor will remain vaporized.  Below this temperature, the water vapor will change phase and condense out of the flue products as liquid.  When this phase change occurs, additional energy is released that is beyond the sensible heat of the flue products.  In a boiler, this phase change occurs on a heating surface and the released energy transfers through the heating surface into the boiler water on the other side.  By capturing this energy, which is lost out the exhaust stack on a conventional system, a condensing boiler gains efficiency, thus making it much more efficient.

Naturally, the products of combustion cannot be reduced in temperature to 130F unless some of the heating surfaces in the boiler are also less than or equal to 130F.  The only way to accomplish this is to have an entering boiler water temperature of less than or equal to 130F.  Simply stated, if return water to the boiler is higher than 130F, condensing cannot occur; even if the boiler modulates and is at its lowest firing rate.  This is determined by the laws of physics.  The highest achievable efficiency that can occur without condensation forming inside the boiler is approximately 87%.

    Descaling a Tankless Heat Exchanger

    Descaling The Heat Exchanger

    Procedure
    1. Disconnect electrical supply from the water heater.
    2. Shut off the water supply to the water heater using (installer
    supplied) isolation valve.
    3. Open hot water taps to drain and relieve pressure from the
    plumbing system.
    4. Drain water from the unit’s heat exchanger by disconnecting
    inlet and outlet water connections.
    5. Connect the line (A) from the outlet of the circulating pump
(installer supplied) to the inlet water fitting on the water
    heater.
    6. Using another line (B), connect to the water outlet fitting
on the water heater. Route the other end of this line into a
    descaling reservoir.
    7. Using a 3rd line (C) from the descaling reservoir, connect to the
inlet side of circulating pump. Verify there is a filter on the end
of the line in the descaling reservoir.
    8. Make sure all connections are “hand tight.”
    9. Fill tank with descaling solution so lines inside are submersed.
We recommend a straight white vinegar solution. If using a
commercial descalant, refer to manufacturer’s instructions on
    dilution with water.
    11. Operate the circulating pump.
    12. Make sure there are no leaks and the solution is flowing
from the descaling reservoir through the heat exchanger and
    returning to the reservoir.
    13. Run solution through the heat exchanger until the solution
returning to the descaling reservoir comes out clear. (Changing
to a fresh solution may be necessary during this process)
    14. Disconnect all lines and drain all solution from heat exchanger.
    Properly discard solution.

Scale, lime and rust buildup decreases the efficiency of tankless water heaters and other appliances. Buildup can restrict flow and ultimately shut down a unit. Flow-Aide System Descaler quickly dissolves water scale, lime, rust, and other water formed deposits, restoring efficiency to most all appliances. Flow-Aide System Descaler is a non-acid, non-toxic concentrate which is certified to NSF/ANSI 60 for use as a cleaner in potable water systems.

Safely remove scale, lime and rust from Tankless Water Heaters, Hydronic Boilers, Tank Water Heaters and more with Flow-Aide System Descaler

    Flow-Aide System Descaler Kit Contains:
    • 1 - 3.5 Gallon Bucket
    • 1 - 350 GPH Pump
    • 2 - 5 Foot Rubber Hoses
    • 1 - Quart Flow-Aide

Biasi 3 Wood Cast Iron Boiler

Wood boilers have come a long way from what they used to be!

One of Houseneeds newest additions is the

Biasi Wood Boiler 3 Pass Technology with Btu output of up to 120,000 - ASME certified and ETL approved

The Biasi 3 WOOD is a new generation of wood boiler that challenges our oil dependency. It is efficient, easy to use, and produces low emissions.

Unlike wood boilers from the past, the Biasi 3WOOD dispels the notion that wood boilers are labor intensive, inefficient and polluting. 3WOOD offers consistent high efficiency with a large heat exchange surface and secondary combustion chamber.
he Biasi 3WOOD wood boilers water-cooled grates, large finned firebox and secondary combustion chamber maximize the burn time and minimize wood consumption. Easy adjustments to the automatic temperature control, secondary air regulator, and flue gas damper enhance fire maintenance. For over 70 years, the BIASI foundry has maintained a reputation for precision pressure castings and quality control that exceeds all international standards. The 3WOOD series is available in four sizes ranging from 89,000 to 120,000 BTU/HR. All threads and fittings are compatible with North American controls and accessories. 3WOOD, the only ASME certified and ETL approved cast iron wood boiler on the market, embodies the design innovation of QHT BIASI.

    1st Pass

Wood burns in a large, finned combustion chamber with water-cooled grates.

    2nd Pass
