Novavent Z-Flex Z Vent

NovaFlex Novavent is designed for use with boilers, high efficiency gas and oil heaters and water heaters where flue gases are vented under pressure. Novavent in 4 Inch contains a built-in, fail-safe gasket and locking band connection. No sealant is required.

Novavent Z Flex is the perfect Venting choice for the Gas Tankless Water Heaters and Gas Boilers that require 4" CAT III Stainless Steel Venting. When compared to plastic and other resin based materials used for venting systems, NovaVENT displays considerably lower thermal expansion and contraction making it much more resistance to stress corrosion cracking.

Novavent Z Flex has wall thimbles, vent terminators, straight vent lengths, elbows and more. We also have accessories such as drain tube kits and sealant. Will work for any other Category II, III and IV gas heating appliance too!

Z Flex Novavent vent pieces will work with Z Flex Z-Vent venting. Novavent is a less expensive alternative to Z-Vent and is also manufactured by Z-Flex which has over 30 years of proven reliability. Novavent has a thinner gauge metal than Z-Vent but still meets all applicable national building and fire codes and is UL listed 1738 for Category II,III, IV gas appliances. Novavent has wall thimbles, vent terminators, straight vent lengths, elbows and multiple adjustable lengths available.

Monoflo Tee the Unique System

When should I use monoflo tees when installing radiators and baseboard and why.

 

Monoflo systems are very unique systems because they have a single pipe around the basement and both the radiation supply and return pipe come off that same pipe.  Water always wants to take the path of least resistance when flowing. If you tried to install a monoflo system without creating pressure differences with specially designed tees the water would not flow to the radiation, it would just flow around the main pipe in the basement. All heat flow is dependent on pressure differences whether it be warm air, hot water or steam. High pressure goes to low pressure all the time, you cannot change that. As long as we create enough of a pressure change it all works fine. On the other hand is we do not create enough of a pressure change it does not work so well.

 

The invention of the monoflo tee is what makes this system work. It creates a pressure change large enough to make the water flow up or down into the radiation and back into the main loop pipe around the basement. You may ask what is the main difference between a series loop which is also one pipe around the basement and a monoflo or diverter tee system. A series loop will start at the boiler and go through all the radiation. It does not have tees off the main loop to each section of radiation, it is a continuous loop from one radiator to the next. The monoflo system has the tees to isolate each section of radiation. A series loop system if you want to shut off a section of baseboard or radiator with a valve you shut flow to the whole loop. The monoflo system if you shut down a valve on a section of baseboard or radiator the rest of the system works. The flow is affected slightly but it would still work just not as efficiently as the flow in the complete system depends on the flow through the monoflo tee and the radiation. There is a limit of 15K btuh on panel radiators for this piping arrangement.

The monoflo tee (see picture at the right) is designed to create a pressure difference between the supply tee and the return tee.  Let's look at the monoflo tee design.  The will have an arrow or a red ring to show direction of flow.


 The way this system works is as the water flows through the pipe it will pass the first tee as the straight pipe is the path of lest resistance. When the water hits the venturi (see picture to the right) in the second tee the amount of water that passes through is reduced but the velocity is increased. The water that is being backed up waiting to pass through the venturi is building pressure due to circulator still pumping. As the pressure builds it will increase until the the pressure at the first tee is great enough to overcome the pressure drop through the radiation connected to the set of tees. The water will circulate through the radiation and the gpm flowing through the radiation is also increased by the venturi effect. As the velocity increases through the venturi it will create a suction at the top of the venturi tee which added to the pressure buildup on the supply tee will flow the proper amount of water.

Radiators vs Fin Tube Baseboard

Heatlink EasyFit Plumbing PEX Manifolds

Heatlink Easyfit Pex Manifolds come in 2 and 3 Port Tees and are sold with 1/2" PEX adapters. So just order the actual amount of ports you need and you should be good to go. There are several different End Connection you need to choose from as well as 3/4" Tee to allow you to send hot or cold water to a separte plumbing manifold in a different location. If you want to use this manifold with 3/8 Inch PEX tubing - buy our Coupler 1/2 by 3/8 inch for each branch you want to use with 3/8 Inch PEX. Use silicone lubricant to lubricate dry o-rings to ensure a tight seal. In case a leak develops during testing, remove pressure from system, clean the o-ring, and reapply silicon lube. When placing the manifold into the supporting bracket, place the bottom snap-in lock in the bottom (braced) notch in bracket and then rotate it so that the top snaps into place. In order to prevent stress on the manifold supply end connections, the supply piping must be braced or supported, parallel to the manifold and centred with the manifold’s inlets.

The Boiler, which resembles a small house, or a large dog house, is located on Houseneeds’ front lawn at 4805 Main Street in Waitsfield. Houseneeds plans on using the new Boiler as their primary source of heat.

All Empyre Wood Boilers use a process called wood gasification to produce super efficient combustion in the boiler’s dual burn chambers. There are five elements that work together to create this 89-90% efficient, clean burning, and environmentally safe Wood Gasification process:

The Firebox is where the wood burns from the bottom up, drying the top layer. The fire brick lining absorbs heat and maintains burn chamber temperatures to reignite quickly
on demand.

Exhaust is then forced down into the lower burn chamber.
The Lower Burn Chamber is where the exhaust burns at up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, eliminating virtually all smoke and gases.

The Flues are where the exhaust air escapes through multiple heat exchange flues running through the water jacket, transferring heat quickly and efficiently.

What is the difference between a condensing and non-condensing boiler?

All boilers under certain conditions will condense.  The difference between a condensing and non-condensing boiler is that a condensing boiler is designed to operate and survive long term in a condensing environment.  A non-condensing boiler will not last as long, because condensate is corrosive.

The condition that causes a boiler to condense is reduced flue gas temperature.  The point at which condensing will occur, also called the dew point of the products of natural gas (or propane) combustion, is about 130F.  Above this temperature, the moisture entrained in flue products as water vapor will remain vaporized.  Below this temperature, the water vapor will change phase and condense out of the flue products as liquid.  When this phase change occurs, additional energy is released that is beyond the sensible heat of the flue products.  In a boiler, this phase change occurs on a heating surface and the released energy transfers through the heating surface into the boiler water on the other side.  By capturing this energy, which is lost out the exhaust stack on a conventional system, a condensing boiler gains efficiency, thus making it much more efficient.  

Naturally, the products of combustion cannot be reduced in temperature to 130F unless some of the heating surfaces in the boiler are also less than or equal to 130F.  The only way to accomplish this is to have an entering boiler water temperature of less than or equal to 130F.  Simply stated, if return water to the boiler is higher than 130F, condensing cannot occur; even if the boiler modulates and is at its lowest firing rate.  This is determined by the laws of physics.  The highest achievable efficiency that can occur without condensation forming inside the boiler is approximately 87%.

Now Offering Empyre Phase II Indoor and Outdoor Wood Boilers

Just in time for the heating season, Houseneeds introduces Empyre’s line of Phase II EPA Certified clean burning Wood Boilers. These Boilers use a process called Wood Gasification that represents the future in Wood Heating.

The Vermont based internet seller of energy efficient, environmentally friendly heating and ventilation products, has announced a partnership with Pro-Fab Industries of Arborg, Manitoba, Canada to offer their Empyre line of Phase II EPA Certified clean burning Wood Boilers. The Empyre line offers multiple options for outdoor or indoor installations. Both the indoor Elite indoor series as well as the Elite XT outdoor series are available in 2 sizes, with up to a 220,000 BTU/hr load. There is also an outdoor Pro Series with a larger BTU load of up to 330,000 BTU/hr.

All Empyre Wood Boilers use a process called wood gasification to produce

super efficient combustion in the boiler’s dual burn chambers. There are five elements that work together to create this 89-90% efficient, clean burning, and environmentally safe Wood Gasification process:

The Firebox is where the wood burns from the bottom up, drying the top layer. The fire brick lining absorbs heat and maintains burn chamber temperatures to reignite quickly

on demand.

Exhaust is then forced down into the lower burn chamber.

The Lower Burn Chamber is where the exhaust burns at up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, eliminating virtually all smoke and gases.

The Flues are where the exhaust air escapes through multiple heat exchange flues running through the water jacket, transferring heat quickly and efficiently.

The Chimney exhaust has now been cooled to 350 degrees Fahrenheit by the time it exits the chimney.

Houseneeds is setting up a Solar Showroom at the Forget-me-Not-Farm in Tinmouth, VT starting this Friday, July 20th. This is a great opportunity for Homeowners who have been considering investing in Solar Heating to gather information and to enjoy some summertime fun.
