    New Department of Energy Standards for Hot Water Heaters

    Manufacturers have been required to comply with the Department of Energy (DOE) energy conservation standards for residential water heaters since 1990. Residential water heaters are products that utilize oil, gas, or electricity to heat potable water for use upon demand for activities such as washing dishes or clothes, or bathing. Residential water heaters include storage type units that store heated water in an insulated tank and instantaneous type units that heat water on demand.

    The standard mandatory in 1990 will save approximately 3.2 quads of energy and result in approximately $34.8 billion in energy bill savings for products shipped from 1990-2019. The standard will avoid about 180 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to the annual greenhouse gas emissions of about 35.3 million automobiles.

    The standard mandatory in 2004 will save approximately 6 quads of energy and result in approximately $70.6 billion in energy bill savings for products shipped from 2004-2033. The standard will avoid about 316.8 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to the annual greenhouse gas emissions of about 62.1 million automobiles.

    Standards mandatory in 2015 will save approximately 3.3 quads of energy and result in approximately $63 billion in energy bill savings for products shipped from 2015-2044. The standard will avoid about 172.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to the annual greenhouse gas emissions of about 33.8 million automobiles.

    Single Walled Brazed Plate Heat Exchangers were developed years ago and they are now the most widely used device for isolating hydronic heating circuits. Single Walled Brazed Plate Heat Exchangers transfer heat from one liquid medium to another with no intermixing of the two fluids. Brazed Plate Heat Exchanger requires the fluid to be pumped into both sides of it at once. The brazed plate heat exchangers we sell can transfer up to 240,000 BTU’s per hour. The amount of heat transferred is dependent on the delta T (difference of temperature between the two fluids). It also depends on the amount of fluid moving through both sides of the heat exchanger. Brazed Flat Plate Heat Exchanger are required for all radiant heating systems where you mix heating water with domestic water.
    Brazed Plate Heat Exchangers are produced with 10 to 50 flat plates, sizing is easy for your hydronic system or solar system. Well - not required everywhere. But, in most places it is and for places where you can mix heating and domestic water - you should never ever mix the two. Thus, use a Brazed Plate Heat Exchanger for all open loop heating systems!

    Supplement your heating system with a space heater

    The Northwest certainly has had a  colder-than-average-winter and the weather in the Midwest and East  as well and it’s still winter in many of these areas. If you heat your home with a gas product your going to be using more fuel to keep up with the colder weather.

    You may be able to save some money by supplementing heat with a space heater in the room you use most and turning down the heat in the rest of the house. (Of course you’ll want to turn off or turn down the space heater then when you’re not in the space it’s heating.)

    What PEX is best to use for your application?

    The answer will depend on many factors, such as your budget, skill level and whether you have already bought any tools or materials. Wondering what PEX A, B and C letters are? They are used to identify the manufacturing process.
    PEX-A is the most expensive of all 3 types and other than slightly greater flexibility than the other (2) types, there are no significant advantages of this type over the other two. Great for all radiant applications easier to install for a person who is a novice due to greater flexibility.

    PEX-B Houseneeds elects not to sell PEX-B because we prefer the properties of PEX-A and PEX-C over the PEX-B.

    PEX-C is the latest addition to PEX line and price-wise is less expensive than PEX-A. Unfortunately, the cross-linking process for this type creates the least amount of bonds (vs. the PEX-A) therefore, the flexibility of the this product is less than PEX-A. If the PEX tubing becomes kinked during handling, it can be re-formed to its original shape by heating it with an electric heat gun to a temperature of approximately
    275F.The tubing will pale slightly when heated and become pliable as the shape restores. Do not overheat, and allow to completely cool undisturbed. The tubing coil has an inside diameter exceeding 15 inches, so that memory-effect of its coiling is minimal. The running ft. markings start from 0 at the inside of each coil so that the installer will always know how tubing is left in the coil.     Valves for Myson SX & SD Panel and Decor Radiators

    The Myson SX, SD and Decor radiators have British Standard straight female pipe threads NOT NPT which means you will need to purchase two conversion valves for each radiator.  the Myson valves are designed to work with the Myson radiators.

    The most popular valve is the LKD16AN used mainly for when your pipes are coming out of the wall or floor. This ½ inch Preset Flow Rate Angle Valve Body with no cap is an Adjustable Flow Valve only without thermostatic control and connects to the Myson radiator 1/2 inch British thread with a wrench and 1/2 Inch Copper Pipe with a compression fitting. Please keep in mind the BSP threads are a straight running thread NOT tapered like NPT.

    Use the LKD16SN  only if your pipes are going straight into the radiator from side to side.


    If you would like to control the temperature room by room than the Myson 2TRV2HD Valve Head has a sensor element which consists of a liquid-filled capsule with an immersed bellows and push rod. As the ambient temperature rises, the liquid in the sensor’s metal capsule expands and compresses the bellows, causing the integral push rod to close the valve. As the room’s ambient temperature drops, the liquid in the capsule contracts, allowing the bellows to retract the push rod to open the valve.  Another special feature of the Myson 2TRV2HD Valve Head is its two integral locking pins, allowing you to lock the temperature at one setting or limit it to a specific range of temperatures. Setting Ambient Range  is 46°F to 83°F.
